Nivea history. Brand history

In 1882, a new era began in the cosmetics and beauty industry - the pharmacist Paul Karl Beiersdorf founded a company and named it after himself. However, Beiersdorf owned the company of the same name for only eight years, and then sold it to businessman Oskar Troplowitz, who, together with dermatologist Paul Unna and pharmacist Isaac Lifschetz, created a skin cream based on a revolutionary moisturizing emulsion.
This is how the famous NIVEA cream appeared from the Latin “nivius” - snow-white.
The first box in which the cream was packed in 1911, like one hundred and three years later, was tin and round. It was decorated in the Art Nouveau style, which then determined the general aesthetic context.

In general, the history of the NIVEA brand is closely related to the visual component. Product promotional posters are as famous as the world-famous blue jar design.

In 1914, more than one and a half million people worked at the factories of the NIVEA brand in 34 countries. The company gradually expanded its product range, releasing shampoos, soaps, styling products.

As early as 1909, NIVEA launched a lip care product. The brand proceeds from the fact that everything in a person should be beautiful - skin, hair and, of course, lips. It seems that before, none of the cosmetic brands thought about the fact that women's lips require special care.
Thus, NIVEA becomes an innovator and trendsetter in the next direction for the next hundred years.

In the post-war fifties, the brand flourished.

NIVEA produces products in the following areas: a skin cream that protects against cold, wind and bad weather, a sun cream, a line of cosmetics designed specifically for children and, of course, hygienic lipstick.

Eucerite, developed by Troplowitz in 1911, has remained the main component of NIVEA products all this time - a unique substance that can combine water, oil and active ingredients.

For over 100 years, NIVEA has been a leader in the skincare industry, continually innovating technology and bringing new products to market. One of the latest achievements of the company can be considered a line of lip care oils with three different attractive flavors that will help keep lips smooth and beautiful at any time of the year.

NIVEA is a trademark owned by the German company Beiersdorf AG.

Nivea comes from the Latin word niveus/nivea/niveum meaning "white".

Story

In Germany, in 1882, the pharmacist Paul Karl Beiersdorf invented the adhesive plaster, and following his invention, he founded the Beiersdorf company (Beiersdorf), which today is a giant in the cosmetics industry.

The history of the Nivea trademark dates back to 1890, when a businessman named Oskar Troplowitz bought the Beiersdorf company from its founder.

In 1914, "Beiersdorf" worked not only in Germany, but produced and sold a significant part of the goods abroad in 34 countries of the world. The scale of the company can be estimated from the fact that in the early 1930s. one and a half million people worked at the enterprises owned by Beiersdorf. Gradually, the range of the company expanded. In addition to cream, plasters and adhesive tapes, soap and powder production begins. The NIVEA series is also being updated - products for hair and scalp appear, a little later - shampoos and styling products.

In the mid-1920s, the Art Nouveau poster already featured cream, soap, powder and hair milk. In 1920, a landmark event took place - the first advertisement of NIVEA products in the cinema. The animated video advertised NIVEA cream in tubes.

The Beiersdorf company in those days was the flagship of cosmetology. In 1922 - the release of the world's first cosmetics for men. At first it was just shaving soap. But it was this soap that evolved over time into NIVEA shaving foams and gels.

More than a hundred years have passed since the appearance of the first NIVEA cream, this event marked the birth of a company that later became one of the most famous cosmetic brands in the world. The history of the company began in 1890, when Dr. Oskar Troplowitz acquired the Hamburg laboratory of Paul Bayeresdorf, and Troplowitz's scientific adviser, Professor Unna, shared with the doctor his knowledge of an innovative emulsifying component called Eucerite.

Together, these people created the world's first oil-based, sustainable cream. In 1911, NIVEA cream, revolutionary for that time, appeared on the market. This cream got the name NIVEA because of its snow-white color, translated from Latin "nivea" means "snow white". In addition to oicerite, which acted as an oil-water binder, the first NIVEA cream contained glycerin, a small amount of citric acid, and rose and lily of the valley aromatic oils. The cream was sold in small round yellow jars. Despite regular technology updates, the basis of the NIVEA cream formula has not changed significantly over the past hundred years.

Today, hundreds of cosmetic products for face and body skin care are produced under the NIVEA brand; not so long ago, NIVEA also launched a line of decorative cosmetics. Among NIVEA's wide range of products you will find body lotions, deodorants, hand care lines, anti-aging lines and products for daily skin care. Nivea is a global skin and body care brand owned by the German company Beiersdorf. In 1882, the pharmacist Carl Paul Beiersdorf created a company that in 1911 developed the first water-oil-based cream called Eucerit, which was the first stable emulsion of its kind. At that time it was.

Brand creation

In 1900, the new owner of Eucerit, Oskar Troplovich, named the company Nivea (from the Latin word Niveus / Niveum, which translates as "snow-white"). During the ownership of the firm by Oskar Troplovich, he developed several of his own products, including Nivea leukoplast, Labello and others. Nivea, despite being based in Poland, was bought by German investors in the 1930s. From this period, she began to release her own products, such as shaving creams, shampoos and facial tonics.

The trademark was confiscated in many countries after World War II. Beiersdorf completed the buyout of the confiscated trademark rights in 1997.
Internationalization in the 1980s allowed the brand to reach more global markets.

Entering new markets

The company's scientists began studying the effects of sunlight on the skin in the early 1930s, resulting in the first sunscreen in 1936. Over the next few decades, other products joined this line of products, such as the spray oil, developed in 1958 for people leading.

Nivea first entered the Middle East market in the 1950s, offering its products in Jordan, Syria and Bahrain. It became the first country in the region to have cosmetic products on the shelves of local shops. Today, the company has a strong position in the regional skin care and cream sector, which demonstrates continuous success in this direction, which is always in step with the times.

Expansion of the product range

Other products, such as milk, developed in 1963, formed the basis of a skin care collection for a generation. The innovative milk formula, which included water and oils, was easy to use. The milk was quickly absorbed and gave the skin a beautiful appearance and elasticity in no time.

During its 100-year history, the brand has implemented numerous projects. The iconic eye-catching blue color that is now inextricably linked to the brand is one of the very rare hues that represents protection and safety around the world.

Meanwhile, the Nivea brand has proven itself in all areas of the cosmetic industry, in addition to classic products like body lotion, the company produces a huge series of shower gels, shampoos, and creams for all skin types. It is known all over the world, from Spain to Thailand and from New Zealand to the North Pole. In these countries, every child knows the blue packaging with white letters.

In 1998, a facial skin care product was also launched, which included the revolutionary active ingredient coenzyme Q10 found in human skin, which has a strong anti-wrinkle effect. Nivea Visage Q10 became an instant bestseller as this product was sold worldwide every two seconds. Later, the company offered this active ingredient in almost all products of the corresponding category, including the Nivea FOR MEN series.

Introducing NIVEA Cream

Everyone is familiar with the blue box, white cream and inimitable aroma. In fact, this cream is loved by many generations around the world for its moisturizing properties, a truly unique scent that has become synonymous with protection, care, trust and happiness.

History of NIVEA skincare

The history of NIVEA dates back to 1890, when Dr. Troplowitz acquired a laboratory for dermatological preparations in Hamburg. Here Dr. Troplowitz worked with scientific consultant and professor of dermatology Unna to develop the first oil-in-water emulsion.

They created a new base for the cream, which was called Eucerit®. It is a wax found in sheep's wool that acts as an emulsifying agent. With the help of this additive, oil and water are bound into a stable connection, thus for the first time there was a base of a snow-white cream. Previously, emulsions responded to temperature changes by separating into independent water and oil.

The resulting cream, enriched with lipids, oils and having a unique scent, was released in 1911. This marked the beginning of the history of a brand that has no equal.

Effect of NIVEA cream

When NIVEA Creme first saw the light of day, it made a lot of noise; this was due not only to the novelty of the product, but also to its packaging.

The use of a special machine to pack the cream into aluminum jars was a historic moment that marked a turning point in the modern cosmetics industry.

Not surprisingly, the snow-white cream instantly became very popular. The formula was used not only to make body emollient, face cream and hand cream, but also to care for children's skin, because the composition turned out to be so gentle. Before NIVEA Creme was introduced to the market in 1911, the only alternatives were water, soap and powder.

Three years later, NIVEA Creme was sold in 34 countries. Today, it is still NIVEA's best-selling product. Since the first appearance on the market, over 15 billion jars of cream have been sold.
